If you watch those lifestyle shows that have a segment on animals, then I am sure that you would have seen stories about tame birds. Some of the birds featured on these shows can say many words and phrases, push toys around on the ground and just can’t seem to get enough of their owners. It is highly likely that these birds were hand raised from birth and it is this process of hand raising that makes them so loving and affectionate with people.

Australia is often referred to as the lucky country and when it comes to native birds this term seems most appropriate. Australia has one of the most diverse ranges of birds in the world, from large parrots such as the yellow tail black cockatoo, through to tiny finches. Overseas, Australian native parrots command many thousands of dollars but here in the highlands we are fortunate enough to see many of these birds by simply opening our back door! Everything old is new again, even chooks!!
Back in the 50's and 60's every back yard had a veggie patch and a couple of chooks. As the population grew our suburban blocks became smaller and as supermarkets grew bigger it just seemed easier to get everything including eggs from there. In the past decade or so, we have become more interested in the food that we eat and how it effects us. We are more aware of the amount of waste that we produce and how it effects our environment and are looking for ways to reduce the “footprint” of waste that we leave.
